Our own experienced GWUOHS staff has designed a variety of summer online opportunities to keep students engaged in learning throughout the summer. These fun and intensive workshops cover many facets for academic growth, including sessions for science/math, Advanced Prep, college-prep, academic success, and liberal arts.

Summer Academy Offerings
Science and Math
Offering: GWUOHS Summer STEM Academy
Dates: July 24-28 (5 days – virtual)
Grades: Rising 9th-12th graders
Capacity: 20 students (max); 5 students (minimum)*
Last Date to Enroll: July 17
Description: This virtual STEM academy will introduce students to the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math. The interactive format will give students a chance to work with others to do hands-on activities in each of these areas. The goals of the academy is to learn more about what each of the areas of STEM is composed of and to enrich the STEM learning that is already done throughout the school year. Each day will focus on one area with students’ presentations on the last day.

Offering: Learning Physics with Rockets Academy
Dates: August 7-11 (5 days – virtual)
Grades: Rising 8th-12th graders
Capacity: 5 students (minimum)*
Last Date to Enroll: July 31
Description: Bring the concepts presented in physics to life through the experience of building and launching a model rocket. Students will need to order a specified rocket kit and have a large open space to launch. Learn basic physics principles and predict the height your rocket will climb, while having fun building and launching your model rocket.
Cost: $250 + Cost of rocket kit (you will be informed as to which specific kit to order prior to the start of the academy)
Offering: Seven Habits of Highly Effective Math Students Academy
Dates: August 21-25 (5 days – virtual)
Grades: Rising 8th-12th graders
Capacity: 5 students (minimum)*

Description: Learn what it takes to be an effective mathematician and grow in problem-solving skills. Students will gain confidence in their abilities to communicate and use "Math is Power" language.

Offering: AP® Math and Science Prep Academy
Dates: August 28-September 1 (5 days – virtual)
Grades: Rising 10th-12th graders
Capacity: 5 students (minimum)*

Description: AP-level math and science courses assume that you remember and are able to do any math skill you have ever learned. This course takes a look back at some concepts that are necessary for success in AP math and science courses. The instructor will also discuss any AP-related questions students may have. Get prepared for a successful AP course.

College Prep
Offering: Writing College-Admissions Essays Academy
Dates: August 14-18 (5 days – virtual)
Grades: Rising 11th-12th graders
Capacity: 5 students (minimum)*

Description: This five-session series teaches students how to successfully write a personal narrative essay for any college application. It includes peer revision/review as well as instructor revision/review of student writing.

Leadership
Offering: Foundations of Leadership – Examining Your Leadership Style
Dates: July 31-August 2 (3 days – virtual)
Grades: Rising 8th-12th graders
Capacity: 5 students (minimum)*

Description: During this workshop, students will participate in virtual team-building and leadership activities and games. Students will also have the opportunity to develop ideas and strategies to create a positive school culture and a more engaged student body in the virtual environment. The workshop will also feature a motivational keynote speaker.

Liberal Arts
Offering: Today’s Social Media and Its Impact
Dates: August 9-11 (3 days – virtual)
Grades: Rising GWUOHS 8th-12th graders who are new to the online-learning environment (or need reinforcement)
Capacity: 5 students (minimum)*

Description: This three-session series teaches students to understand the impact of social media on news organization and world events. Students will be guided in an exploration of topics, such as the implications of immediate news alerts, activism on social media, social media’s effect on journalism, and much more.
Cost: $250
*If the course fails to receive the required minimum number of students the class will be cancelled and all monies paid by the student will be reimbursed.
