Course Overview

This course is for anyone who loves gaming and wants to design and build original games from scratch. Students learn how to use popular game-development software to create engaging, interactive games in a variety of styles. After learning about game genres, students learn about all aspects of the game-design process. From there, it's on to a series of increasingly challenging hands-on projects that teach all the elements of successful game development. This course provides a solid foundation in the essentials of game design.


Course Outline

Project 1: Ping

Students learn about different types of games and some of the basics of Multimedia Fusion 2. They learn about the Frame Editor, the play area, and drawing tools in the Animation Editor. They learn about active and static objects, how to clone objects, Bouncing Ball movement, and collision events. They practice Eight Directions movement, test position events, events that track the score and end the game, and events that display text. They learn about WAV and MP3; adding sounds, title screens, Start frames, and text. They build their game as an .exe file to share with others.

Project 2: Ice Breakers

Students learn about the Library Toolbar, Backdrop objects, mouse-controlled movement, and keyboard-controlled events. They duplicate objects in rows and columns and create events that destroy objects and play sounds. They learn about Lives and Score objects, format text, and build their game as an .exe file to share with others.

Project 3: Cat Burglar

Students learn about maze games and plots, add game objects and collision events, add and destroy objects, and create pick or count conditions. They add Lives objects, create events that subtract lives, and change bounce properties of objects. They learn about animation, frames, animated objects, and looping animation. They create new animations inside objects, create animation sequence actions; add events that connect frames, and build the game as an .exe file to share with others.

Project 4: Alien Attack

Students learn about shooter games, add objects and give them Path movement, reverse and loop movement, and combine a timer condition and pick or count condition. They create start of frame conditions and set cursor shape actions, add and format Score objects, create on loop conditions and start loop actions, and reorder actions in the Event List Editor. They add Counter objects with gradients, identify initial value, minimum value, and maximum value for Counter objects, and define calculation and math symbols. They add, name, and move frames; add backgrounds and text; connect frames; add Hi-Score objects; and build the game as an .exe file to share with others.

Project 5: Pest Busters

Students learn about horizontal and vertical scrolling, side-scrolling games, parallax perspective, layers, and the Layers Toolbar. They add, arrange layers, hide, and lock layers. They learn about pixels, coordinates, visible play areas, and virtual width. They change the virtual width, create scrolling events, wrap layers, change scrolling speed, and add bullets and shoot object actions. They add collision events that destroy objects, add and subtract lives and destroy players, add bonus objects, and restore lives. They create an End frame with a Hi-Score object, create the Start frame, set up separate start buttons, and build the game as an .exe file to share with others.

Project 6: Amazon Adventure

Students learn about platform and platform games. They add Platform movement to an object, scroll layers relative to an object, and change scrolling speed. They change the gravity and strength jump settings of objects, create collision events with Backdrop objects, and add collection area objects. They make objects invisible, set them to appear later, add warp objects, draw motion paths, add transitions, create Level 2 frames, and build the game as an .exe file to share with others.
